Video: Iranian nurse risks life to save babies when US bombed Tehran hospital

Tehran’s Khatam-al-Anbiya Hospital was among the targets when the US military campaign rained bombs on Iran. When it came under attack and panic broke out, with people running for cover, a nurse in the neonatal ward put on a brave face, grabbing three newborns to safety even as the building began to crumble. A video of her brave act has now emerged.

According to Iranian news agency Wana, the newborns had not yet completed an hour since their arrival when the explosions occurred, and their mothers were still in the intensive care unit.

Neda Salimi, a nurse in the ward, was busy checking the vital signs of the children when the attack took place on March 1, the third day of the US military campaign in Iran.

People started screaming, and walls and roofs had already begun to collapse, as seen in the video. Thick dust also choked the air. But instead of seeking shelter for herself first, the nurse, Neda, rushed to the cribs and pulled out the children one by one.

She was able to navigate through corridors filled with smoke and rubble, pressing three newborns to her chest, Iranian media reported. The babies were later handed over to their mothers.

The US launched a military campaign on Iran on April 28, accusing the country of trying to manufacture weapons of mass destruction. The attacks have wiped out Tehran’s top leadership, including its then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and destroyed several critical civilian and defence infrastructure across the country.

According to Iranian authorities, the final death toll from the conflict, from the start of the war until April 8 when the ceasefire was declared, stood at 3,375. The toll included 26 members of the medical staff, while 118 among them were injured during the war.
