Amid growing speculation about a possible US military deployment in Iran's Kharg Island, Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, said Washington may have to deploy forces if it decides to secure maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the India Today Conclave 2026 in New Delhi, the envoy said such a step would depend on the decision of the US President.

"If the President of the United States has said he wants to defend movement in the Straits of Hormuz, then he would have to deploy some forces. Exactly how that will be done, I do not have the operational details," Reuven Azar said.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with roughly 20 per cent of global oil trade -- about 20 million barrels per day -- passing through the narrow waterway. The ongoing war launched by United States, Israel against Iran has disrupted the global energy supplies.
