Stones were thrown at the Assistant High Commission of India in Chittagong as protests over the killing of anti-India activist Sharif Osman Hadi escalated, police and local media said.
Videos shared on social media showed groups throwing stones near the diplomatic office and the official residence, with smoke seen in the area. Police said incidents of arson were also reported, prompting a heavy security deployment to prevent further damage.
The violence followed the announcement of Hadi’s death, after which mobs vandalised and set fire to the offices of newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, as well as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house at Dhanmondi 32 and the Chhayanaut Sanskriti Bhaban overnight. Attacks were also reported in parts of Chittagong, Rajshahi and several other areas.
