With politicians making anti-India remarks, extremist forces too have joined in and warned the Indian Mission of “consequences”

India’s foreign ministry has issued a statement addressing Bangladeshi conspiracy theories about attackers of Sharif Osman Hadi---a leader of Inqilab Mancha---being given shelter by India.

On a day the South Block summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah to register strong protest over the deteriorating security environment in the neighbouring nation, particularly in the wake of young politicians making anti-India remarks, extremist forces in Bangladesh turned the heat further up.

Mosaddeq Ali Ibn, leader of July uprising and a student leader of Dhaka University—who led a long march towards the Indian High Commission in Dhaka until it was stopped barely a kilometer short of it—gave a provocative speech where he warned the Indian Mission of “consequences". “If they (India) continue to act this way (summon Bangladesh HC), we will retaliate. Everyone will have axes in their hands. Not even a single brick will be spared here. We will uproot India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh from Bangladesh and banish him," he said.

As Ali took a break, another student leader, Rashid Pradhan, took the mic and announced: “We stopped here this time. Next time, we will enter the Indian High Commission in Dhaka."

The entire drama unfolded in very close proximity to the High Commission. There was information available well in advance about such a march, which is why the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) in Dhaka was shut from 2pm (Bangladesh time) on Wednesday, citing “ongoing security concern". However, police failed to stop the agitators much ahead than where it finally did.

Earlier in the day, India’s foreign ministry issued a statement addressing Bangladeshi conspiracy theories about attackers of Sharif Osman Hadi—a leader of Inqilab Mancha—being given shelter by India. In a statement, MEA called it “false narrative sought to be created by extremist elements regarding certain recent events in Bangladesh".

The statement came in the backdrop of a comment by Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah, who threatened to “sever the seven sisters", referring to India’s northeastern states. Despite creating a diplomatic row, Abdullah refused to back down. “I heard Bangladesh High Commissioner was summoned by India and asked to explain why we said what we said. For giving refuge to murderer Sheikh Hasina, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh should be kicked out (of Bangladesh)," he said while addressing a crowd.

Explaining the situation in Bangladesh, Arifa Rehman Ruma, a Bangladeshi academician, said it feels like the country and its polity are spiraling out of control.

“Hasnat Abdullah publicly said the Indian High Commissioner should be kicked out—a statement no responsible politician should ever make. Extremist and violent figures like Hasnat and his supporters are now the only real power backing Md Yunus," she said.
