Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii erupted on March 10, sending lava nearly 1,000 feet high, causing closures in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Park and along Hawaii Route 11.

The famed Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii erupted again on March 10, sending dramatic fountains of lava soaring nearly 1,000 feet into the air and forcing temporary closures in a nearby national park and along a major highway.
According to The Associated Press, the eruption created showers of volcanic fragments including ash and glass-like debris known as tephra that fell over surrounding areas, prompting officials to close parts of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Park near the summit.
Authorities also partially shut Hawaii Route 11, a key road that runs around the island, after falling volcanic material created hazardous conditions.
The latest activity is part of an ongoing eruptive cycle that began in December 2024. Scientists say the March 10 event marks the 43rd eruptive episode during this period, with the volcano repeatedly sending towering lava fountains into the sky.
Livestream footage from the site showed two bright-red fountains of molten lava rising from the crater while thick smoke drifted above the volcano.
Experts say it remains unclear how long the current episode will last. Previous bursts of activity during the ongoing eruption have ranged from a few hours to several days.
Despite the spectacular display, the molten rock remains confined within the volcano’s summit crater, meaning nearby homes and buildings are not currently under threat.
However, the falling ash and volcanic debris have created temporary disruptions for communities and travelers in the area.
Scientists from the US Geological Survey and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory had earlier detected a glow from lava inside the Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, signaling that the volcano had begun erupting again.
Kīlauea has remained one of the world’s most active volcanoes and frequently draws visitors hoping to witness its fiery eruptions.
While the summit eruption is currently contained within the national park, past events have caused significant destruction. A major 2018 eruption destroyed more than 700 homes on the island, underscoring the volcano’s potential power.
