China’s embassy in the United States briefly posted an AI-generated video mocking US President Donald Trump and his proposed “Shield of the Americas" initiative, highlighting the growing rivalry between China and the United States over influence in Latin America.

The 18-second animated clip, produced by Xinhua News Agency, was posted on the embassy’s X account before later being removed. Titled “Shield of the Americas, or shackles of the Americas?", the video appeared to criticize Washington’s security plans for the region.

The animation shows a bald eagle in a suit widely interpreted as a symbol of the United States presiding over a group of white doves representing Latin American nations. The eagle presses a red button that first triggers an atomic blast before unveiling a large red, white and blue shield meant to “keep everyone safe." Moments later, the shield transforms into a cage trapping the doves, as the eagle says: “Relax, sometimes security comes with a little control."

The video surfaced just days after Trump spoke at the Shield of the Americas Summit in Florida. The meeting brought together right-wing and centre-right leaders from 12 Latin American countries and focused on regional security cooperation.

At the summit, Trump warned about what he described as “hostile foreign influence" in the Western Hemisphere, with a particular focus on China’s expanding presence in Latin America.

The administration has proposed forming a regional military coalition as part of its strategy to counter external powers. The policy also aligns with Washington’s broader doctrine aimed at preserving US dominance in the region, often referred to as the “Trump Corollary" to the Monroe Doctrine.

Trump has repeatedly accused China of seeking strategic footholds in the hemisphere, including claims that Beijing is operating the Panama Canal an assertion widely disputed.

While a Hong Kong-based company previously controlled two key port terminals near the canal, Panama’s high court ruled last month that the arrangement was illegal, a decision strongly criticized by Beijing.

Despite the ruling, Trump continued raising the issue during the summit, saying the US would not allow foreign powers to gain control over strategically vital assets in the hemisphere.

China, however, has steadily deepened its economic ties across Latin America over the past decade. Beijing has financed infrastructure projects and expanded trade partnerships with several countries in the region.

One example is the Port of Chancay, inaugurated in 2024 with support from COSCO Shipping. The project is expected to significantly shorten shipping times between South America and Asia.

Trade figures also illustrate the growing relationship. Chinese exports to Latin America rose 9.3% between January and November 2025 compared with the same period the previous year, according to China’s customs data.

Even countries politically aligned with Washington maintain strong economic links with Beijing. In Argentina, imports from China surpassed $16 billion in 2025, a 57% increase despite President Javier Milei being considered one of Trump’s closest allies in the region.
